Iniesta Could Join CSL Without a Transfer Fee

Andrés Iniesta is reportedly weighing the pros and cons of a move to the Chinese Super League (CSL). Among the clubs interested, Tianjin Quanjian has already extended a formal invitation. Iniesta’s family has also been in contact with CSL representatives, although no agreement has been reached so far. Nevertheless, Tianjin is eager to finalize the deal quickly, fearing that hesitation might open the door for rival clubs to swoop in.

Inside the Barcelona dressing room, there’s a growing acceptance that Iniesta may be on his way out. The club itself has come to terms with the idea of his departure. Barça continues to maintain a strong and respectful relationship with Iniesta, appreciating his immense contributions and supporting whatever decision he makes. The consensus is that he is likely to accept one of the lucrative offers from China—an ideal contract for the final chapter of his illustrious career.

Barcelona’s coaching staff recognizes that Iniesta’s exit would mark the end of an era. If he stays, he remains a vital part of the squad. If he leaves, Ousmane Dembélé and Philippe Coutinho are expected to step into more prominent roles. Besides Tianjin Quanjian, several other CSL clubs are reportedly pursuing Iniesta as well.

In total, Iniesta has received four attractive offers, a testament to his enduring value despite his age. He is expected to make a final decision after Spain’s Holy Week in April, during which he plans to hold further talks with Chinese clubs. At present, Iniesta remains a core player in Ernesto Valverde’s lineup and is still physically fit to perform at the highest level. Tianjin Quanjian hopes to sign him after the 2018 World Cup but is also open to waiting until January next year if needed.

Following the Champions League match against Chelsea, Iniesta made headlines with a candid comment, suggesting he might leave Barcelona for China. He has set April 30 as the deadline for his final decision. According to his contract, Iniesta can depart Barça as a free agent this summer—meaning any CSL club signing him would not have to pay a transfer fee. The only condition is that Iniesta informs the club of his intentions in advance.

Barcelona’s lifetime contract with Iniesta was more than a formality; it was a gesture of gratitude for his loyalty since joining the club at age 12. Until now, he had consistently turned down outside offers. But should he choose to leave, he can unilaterally terminate the agreement, just as Barcelona allowed Dani Alves to leave for Juventus on a free transfer.

This flexible arrangement opens the door for Iniesta to play the first half of the next season with Barça and then make his move after Arthur joins the squad. Whether or not he departs, one thing is clear: Iniesta’s legacy at Barcelona is already written in gold. But a new chapter may be just around the corner—and it could begin in China.
